Director, Research Engineering (Yahoo)

The goal of Yahoo! Research is to be a world-class industrial research organization whose mission is to develop the new sciences of the Internet on which the next generation of Yahoo! products and services will be based. To support our cutting-edge research agenda, we are growing a corps of research engineers, who will work together with our research scientists to develop novel software solutions for problems in search and information retrieval, machine learning, computational linguistics, matrix and graph algorithms, unsupervised clustering, data mining, human-computer interaction/user experience, social media, and microeconomics – all at huge scale. We seek a dynamic, experienced leader to manage the growth and development of this corps of research engineers.

Research engineers participate as key contributors on several types of projects, including substantial development of large-scale research prototypes; rapidly evolving research experiments leading to novel insights and research publications; and creation and maintenance of leading-edge research platforms to be used in multiple projects. The RE Director must be familiar with and have had experience in the evolution of each of these kinds of projects.

The Research Engineering Director will manage a group that will grow to 20 to 40 engineers located around the world. We will have research engineers collocated with each of our research teams, currently in Silicon Valley, the SF Bay Area, New York City, Barcelona, Spain, and Santiago, Chile, with future growth to a small number of other countries anticipated. In addition, we expect to have a substantial contingent of engineers in Bangalore, India. The Director must have prior experience in managing a diverse team of substantial size across multiple locations/time zones, with experience managing development teams in India a strong preference.

Substantial personal software engineering/development experience is a necessity, as is the proven ability to manage engineering talent in a complex, fast-moving research environment. The RE Director must have intimate knowledge of modern programming languages and environments and substantial personal experience coding systems, both for production and for research.

Strong people management skills are a must, as are the usual planning and budgeting skills required for a director-level job.

  • General proficiency in languages like Java, C++, C#, C, Perl, PHP, Python, Tcl; thorough understanding and practice in the use of object-oriented design patterns and data management systems, relation or object-oriented is desirable. Substantial experience in system architecture design, architecture review, and system testing processes is strongly desired.
  • Excellent communication and influencing abilities.
  • Excellent recruiting ability with substantial experience recruiting both junior and senior engineering talent.
Responsibilities:
  • Manage the portfolio of all engineering projects within Yahoo! Research, making priority calls, assigning engineers to projects, and planning ahead to satisfy an ever-changing set of project implementation demands.
  • Manage growth and reduction of engineering resources applied to projects, including, where necessary, cessation of engineering support for a project..
  • Meet regularly with internal Research customers (e.g., technical leads) to assure that projects are being executed well and that future needs are anticipated.
  • Provide career management guidance for all Yahoo! Research engineers.
  • Ensure adequate performance and security for all external-facing Research software projects, including the Yahoo! Research website, Tech Buzz Game, ShareLab data-sharing initiative, etc.
  • Manage the budgeting, planning and tracking for all capital equipment for Yahoo! Research.
