Fraud R&D Engineer

Primary Job Responsibilities

PayPal Risk Management team is seeking a top performer who will be a key contributor in an exciting and high-energy growth environment. You will join a talented team for managing risk of online money transfer and detecting and combating online fraud. You will research and explore new technologies and approaches to combating fraud to enhance PayPal’s sophisticated risk modeling system.

  • Designing, developing and managing risk/fraud prevention systems, expanding PayPal’s anti-fraud technology toolkit.
  • Researching and developing technologies to predict and control risk associated with new accounts, credit card fraud, bank account fraud, identity theft, spoof, and other fraud trends as they emerge.
  • Applying risk/fraud models to identify and prevent transactions that violate PayPal acceptable use policies
  • Preparing and extracting data from large databases.
  • Analyzing and distilling actionable intelligence from massive data sets of diverse information from user profile to historical transaction records.
  • Communicating continuously with operations and business units to understand current and emerging threats.
  • Researching technologies and developing working prototype systems; analyzing and communicating their value to management.
  • Working with product managers and engineering to deploy production versions of technologies developed.
  • Consulting with various business units on fraud and anti-fraud technologies and their implications.

Job Requirements

  • Creativity, curiosity, and drive to take risks and explore new possibilities that may fail.
  • Be able to work independently with minimal supervision.
  • Strong communication skills with both technical and non-technical audiences.
  • Excellent analytical and problem solving skills.
  • Ability to conceive and implement prototype systems using a variety of technologies working.
  • Comfort analyzing massive data sets in multiple databases.
  • Be able and be willing to do hands-on data analysis
  • M.S. or Ph.D in Computer Science, Statistics, Mathematics, Operations Research or other quantitative engineering area is preferred.
  • Previous experience handling data analysis for large banks or financial services companies is preferred.
  • Previous experience in prediction systems, trend analysis, or classification is preferred.
  • An enthusiastic team player willing to actively communicate with the team, share ideas and create an energetic environment encouraging creativity, learning, and results.
  • Familiarity with Python, Perl, C++, or Java is required. Familiarity with all is preferred.
  • Familiarity with SQL and UNIX is preferred

Education: Bachelors Degree or Equivalent
