Research Scientist - Insightful Corp (Seattle, WA)
SUMMARY:
This position requires a person with a strong background in statistical methodology, algorithms development, data analysis, and software development. The primary responsibilities are to develop software for high-dimensional regression and machine learning applications using least angle regression (LARS) and for assisting contract research projects to successful completion.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES:
- Responsible for the development and implementation of generalized LARS regression and classification routines for the S language (both S-PLUS and R dialects). This includes creating the S language interface, underlying core computational routines (in C/C++ or Fortran), automated test and validation routines, and related documentation such as help files and user’s guide.
- Develop simulation studies to verify the algorithms and the robustness of the methodologies and software in the areas of microarrays, proteomics, and other high-dimensional applications. Validate the application of the methodologies for machine learning and data analysis to assist the practicing scientist, clinician, or researcher in understanding and processing of data in a wide variety of real world applications.
- Author technical papers related to algorithms, methodology, and simulation and case study results; write reports to funding agencies.
- Interest and willingness to conduct novel research in statistics and machine learning.
- Prepare research grant applications in the field of statistics and related areas and applications.
- Participate in consulting opportunities related to this work. Prepare training materials for and teach short courses in modern regression methods.
- Create company and contract compliant deliverables through individual contributions.

ESSENTIAL KNOWLEDGE AND SKILLS:
Education and Training: Ph.D. in Statistics, Biostatistics, Applied Mathematics, or related field.
SPECIALIZED KNOWLEDGE AND SKILLS:
- A strong background in statistical algorithms, numerical analysis, computational statistics, and data analysis.
- Expertise in least angle regression and related modern regression or machine learning techniques.
- Demonstrated work experience with S-Plus or R and Fortran or C/C++.
- Experience with Windows and Unix development platforms; defect tracking systems; configuration management; and source control management such as cvs or Perforce.
- Excellent written and oral communication skills, as demonstrated by term papers, technical publications, or conference presentations.
