The Health Protection Agency (HPA) is an independent body that protects the health and well-being of everyone in England and Wales. The Agency plays a critical role in protecting people from infectious diseases and in preventing harm when hazards involving chemicals, poisons or radiation occur. We also prepare for new and emerging threats, such as a bio-terrorist attack or virulent new strains of pathogen

We are seeking to appoint a mathematical modeller to develop and apply mathematical, statistical and economic models of MRSA carriage and disease. This work will help to predict the impact of control measures and integrate effectiveness data with economic variables to determine the likely effectiveness and cost-effectiveness of MRSA control programmes. This is part of an international study and the post-holder will be expected to develop and maintain effective collaborations and co-ordinate the research in order to meet the objectives of this project.

The post involves a range of complex and original scientific work and requires a high degree of personal motivation. The ideal candidate will have a good first degree and either a PhD in a subject with a substantial mathematical or statistical component, or at least three years equivalent experience. He/she will have experience of analyzing data, developing mathematical models and writing scientific papers. Any familiarity with stochastic processes, infectious disease modelling, Bayesian methods and health economics would be a distinct advantage. Experience of computer programming is essential.
There are over 30 statisticians, mathematical modellers and bioinformatics scientists working in the department where this post will be based, who are working on a wide range of infectious disease problems. The post-holder will also be working in collaboration with national and international epidemiological and microbiological experts.
The Centre for Infections at Colindale, NW London is an internationally renowned centre of excellence for expertise, reference and research, surveillance and epidemiology in relation to micro-organisms that affect human health. The modern purpose built centre is well equipped and staffed and provides excellent Library, Occupational Health and Refectory facilities. There is also a Nursery on site.
