Trading Research Analyst (San Francisco, CA)

BGI’s Global Trading Research Group is looking for an individual to analyze large financial datasets. The group is responsible for modeling, forecasting, and monitoring patterns that affect execution quality, such as transaction cost, volatility, volume, and short-term returns. Assets covered are equities, currency, futures, and commodities. The ideal candidate will have strong programming skills and real-world experience working with large financial datasets. This is a tremendous opportunity to learn about the buy-side business and financial modeling.

Primary Responsibilities


  • Data analysis, including gathering, merging, and cleaning data.
  • Help identify patterns and assist in measuring and analyzing transaction level data.
  • Help conduct high frequency alpha research.
  • Be a team player, working well with partners in trading, portfolio managers, research, and trading research.

Qualifications

  • BA/BS in Physics, Mathematics, Engineering, Computer Science, or related field; an advanced degree is preferred.
  • Excellent analytical and problem solving skills coupled with a strong attention to detail.
  • Experience working with large datasets and/or relational databases.
  • A minimum of two years C++/Java programming in a Unix or Windows NT environment.
  • Good communication skills and the ability to work effectively and adapt quickly in a rapidly changing, team-based environment.
  • Good knowledge of Perl and Sybase.
  • Knowledge and practical experience with statistical packages (e.g., Matlab, Splus, SAS).
  • Strong econometric and statistical skills are preferable.
  • Industry knowledge of trading operations is desirable.
