Senior Scientist, Media Discovery Startup (Needham, MA)Behind the scenes youll find top people from the disciplines of technology, science, mathematics and media. matchmine is a well-funded stealth mode startup located in Needham, MA. We're looking for an experienced analytical thinker with a passion for understanding how to analyze raw data and turn it into usable information. The ideal candidate has a core foundation in either a numbers-based discipline like mathematics or statistics, or a more applied field such as physics, computer science, artificial intelligence, or even computational biology. We're not necessarily looking for a single career path from "A" to "Z", rather we're interested in a thought leader having taken any number of career paths. The goal of this position is to leverage hard-earned experience analyzing and manipulating large data sets (the more disparate the better) and apply them toward solutions enabling consumers to find the rich content they want online. Major Responsibilities: Reports directly to the Chief Scientist. Analyzes disparate data sets for relevant trends and clusters. Helps identify the utility of available data, suggesting acquisition targets. Proposes, tests, and codifies prototype algorithms to match data patterns. Interfaces with Engineering to convert prototypes into production code. Continually tests assumptions and iteratively helps refine production algorithms. Requirements: Glides through complex data, distilling it into manageable, meaningful sets. Understands how to develop, test, and codify complex algorithms to manipulate dynamic data. Has knowledge of the current state of the art in machine learning and intelligent agents. Can effectively bridge between theory and the reality of available data and resources. Works well within a dynamic, date-driven, goal-oriented culture. Advanced Degree in Applicable Discipline. 10+ years in working in a corporate environment, 4+ years in a senior role. Useful Skills: Statistics / Mathematics: A firm grasp of the formulae used to describe trending and other mathematical representations of large data sets. An intuitive understanding of the drivers in various data sets as well as how they can be interpreted for meaning with the end goal being actionable manipulation of input/output parameters to produce desired results. A solid familiarity with one or more of the common tools is required (eg. GAUSS, MATLAB, Mathematica, NumPy, etc.). Data Mining / Analytics: An understanding of the interconnectedness of data and how it can be used to provide actionable information. Much of the work will be built on the back of rigorously analyzing large, non-homogenous data acquired from multiple sources. Assumed is a general experience with standard data mining techniques and specific experience with one or more associated tools is a plus (eg. SAS, SPSS, STATA, Spotfire, Weka, etc.). In order to interface directly with our databases, an understanding of SQL in general is required, and knowing mySQL in specific is helpful. Algorithm Development: Being in a position to evaluate the data in conjunction with the output of the above skills, actionable algorithms will need to be developed to bridge the gap between theory and reality. The algorithms need to be written to take full advantage of the multitude of varied inputs (eg. structured and unstructured input data, implicit and explicit user feedback, etc.). To do so, it will be necessary to have a strong understanding of various Machine Learning / Artificial Intelligence techniques (eg. neural networks, SVMs, Bayesian networks, genetic programming, etc.). With a strong focus on the current and future state of online communities, a firm grasp of known collaborative filtering techniques is also important for evaluation, possible integration, and benchmarking. Programming / Database Support: The skills defined above tend to lean to the "science" side of the fence, and it is not assumed they are perfectly compatible with production-grade programming and database skills. In order to facilitate the integration of the algorithms with the Engineering Department, some applicable programming experience is required, preferably in Java or Python. Beyond knowing SQL, deeper experience with database management is a plus. Leadership and Communication: It is key for senior members of the Science Department to take an ownership position in the overall success of the underlying science upon which the company is built. To do so, it will be necessary to clearly articulate difficult concepts and discuss them with multiple stakeholders. Within the context of a growing company, it will often be necessary to interface directly with Engineering, Product Development, and Senior Management. Computational Linguistics: While not a core requirement of the position, an understanding of the power, and complexity of language is important. Experience with well-known NLP techniques (eg. semantic modeling, ontologies, etc.) and software is helpful (eg. LingPipe, GATE, NLTK, etc.).
