Senior Research Statistician, Internal Medicine (San Francisco, CA)


The Northern California Institute for Research and Education (NCIRE) is a research institute working in conjunction with the San Francisco VA. NCIRE has some on the country’s most renowned physician-scientists and scientists working in partnership with the University of California San Francisco (UCSF) and the San Francisco Veterans Affairs Medical Center (SFVAMC) to integrate research interests with the needs of veterans. Medical research is conducted in such diverse areas as aging, cardiovascular disease, neurodegenerative diseases, and cancer. Since it’s inception in 1988, NCIRE continues to increase its revenue through NIH, NASA, and sponsored grants.

The HR team has a wonderful opportunity for a Senior Research Statistician for the Department of Internal Medicine for a new research study aimed at assessing the effectiveness of telephone-administered motivational interviewing mental health services to veterans with post traumatic depression and possible substance. Under supervision of the Project Director, the Statistician will perform all data analyses for the study.

Essential duties include:

  • Create datasets from raw data and write data analysis programs
  • Conduct advanced statistical analyses including longitudinal analyses using logistic and linear regression, and survival analyses.
  • Produce written reports of data summaries and maintain copies of coding used for all analyses
  • Advise researcher on appropriate statistical methods
  • Contribute to research study design, and methods and results sections for research publications and grant applications
  • Independently write data analysis sections and conduct power analyses for grant applications and IRB protocols
  • Independently write data analysis and statistical methods sections for manuscripts and reports.
  • Assist with table/figure creation for data presentation
  • Analyses involving large national administrative datasets

Qualified candidates must possess 4 years experience and a BA in statistics, public health or related field or an equivalent combination of education and experience, MA preferred. A Minimum of 1 years’ experience working in clinical research, programming experience in SAS and other statistical software packages (e.g. Stata), experience with logistic regression, and regression techniques for longitudinal data, experience and ability to work comfortably with large national administrative datasets. Candidates must also be able to manage multiple projects, tasks and priorities to achieve desired goals, work under minimal supervision and be able to meet deadlines. Strong accuracy and attention to detail a must.
