Quantitative research assistant (Bristol, UK)


For Professional Associations Research Network (PARN), Bristol, UK.

PARN is a research enriched network for professional bodies and it is associated with the Department of Management of the University of Bristol. It undertakes research, provides networking events, and publishes research findings. PARN has around 140 member organisations across all sectors, including the Law Society, the British Medical Association, the major engineering and accountancy professional bodies and many others.

THE ROLE:

To provide support for research projects. PARN undertakes research for individual member organisations (consultancy), consortia of member organisations, external bodies such as the DfES, and projects for the benefit of all its member organisations. These range in duration from 1 day to 1 year. You will be involved with the quantitative aspects of many of these research projects.

TASKS:

  • Analysis and interpretation of large scale survey data
  • Produce summaries of various surveys according to the requirements of research team colleagues
  • Present these summaries in the most appropriate way
  • Respond to any queries about the results from colleagues
  • Set up surveys in SNAP (survey software), publish them online
  • Carry out complex statistical analysis on data
  • "Clean" data and recode data when necessary
  • Advise on survey design and analysis
  • Explain statistical techniques to non-statisticians
  • Answer technical queries from colleagues about SNAP
  • Write up the results of investigations in concise reports
  • Give feedback on reports produced by others
  • Supervise junior staff
  • Liaise with consultancy clients
  • Present findings at conferences
  • Keep records of progress (audit trail)

REQUIREMENTS

Essential:

  • Qualification in research methods at degree level or above (or equivalent)
  • A postgraduate qualification in a relevant subject
  • Social science background
  • experience in using statistical inference, exploratory data analysis, regression modelling (including single/multiple linear regression) and multivariate data analysis techniques in a social science context
  • Well organised and methodical
  • Flexible
  • fluent English (spoken and written)

Desirable:
  • Qualification in statistics at degree level or above (or equivalent)
  • experience of using Excel/R to carry out analysis
  • can adapt to change and new situations
  • a love of numbers and large data sets
  • presentation skills
  • high level of accuracy and attention to detail
  • experience with SNAP/other survey software
  • excellent report writing skills
  • ability to supervise staff
  • ability to automate repetitive tasks and generally work at a programming level of thinking
  • ability to find ways of doing things that have not done before using your initiative and technical skills
  • ability to spot inconsistencies, see that data does not make sense
  • advanced skills in Microsoft Word and Excel - in particular ability to use and create complex formulas in Excel
  • Sense of humour and positive attitude
  • experience of presenting research findings to non-statisticians and large audiences
  • member of Royal Statistical Society
  • negotiating skills

HOURS: 35 hours per week
SALARY: in the range £16-£18k per annum
