Sr. System Manager, SAS - Macys (San Francisco, CA)

Overview of Position:

The System Manager (SM) is responsible for specific systems critical to the macys.com business and the teams necessary for building and maintaining them. The SM manages major macys.com system development efforts, such as the implementation, roll-out, and on-going management of SAS systems: Merchandise Planning, Business Intelligence, and Financial Management.

The position is an entrepreneurial mix of exceptional team management, system ownership, ability to work well with programmers, and strong interface skills with the business stakeholders.

Key stakeholders include macys.com senior management, business users of the three systems [Buyers, Merchandisers, Planners, Finance], Macy's Systems Technology, and Operations.

Key Accountabilities:

The System Manager’s responsibilities include:

  • Owning the system, the team developing it, and overall health of both
  • Providing a single point of leadership to gain executive sponsorship, streamlined communication, a common understanding of development plans and goals, and facilitated change management.
  • Managing the team implementing the systems, specifically the programmers, partnering with Project Management and Business Analysts to ensure development is on target.
  • Facilitating all phases of system development and enhancements, working closely with interested stakeholders, and partnering with project management on the appropriate development methodology.
  • Leading the team and system development to make sure the development and enhancement milestones, budget, and timeline are met.
  • Communicating regularly with senior management on system health and progress
  • Escalating issues as needed
  • Establishing success criteria with stakeholders and regularly soliciting feedback to assess success level
  • Working closely with the core project team to ensure that business needs are addressed with the features and functionality in the different systems.
  • Ensuring all contracts with vendors are executed successfully
  • Monitoring team health and coaching team members to optimally perform
  • Setting business expectations appropriately to balance timeline, resource needs, and scope to ensure the systems support the business with a positive ROI and low risk of system failure.
  • Developing team members with regular coaching, reviews, and overall personnel management
  • Developing 3-year strategies for the systems that include roadmaps for all necessary enhancements and development aligned with the business goals for the three systems.

Skills Summary:
  • Extensive SAS development and project management experience, specifically with the Marketmax, BI, and FMS
  • Experience having been a senior level project manager on multiple full software development projects. Having held the responsibilities of requirements gathering, resource, budget, and timeline management, project plan ownership, and end-to-end completion of system development.
  • Experience presenting to and working with senior management.
  • 3 years of managing technology developers, conducting their reviews, and supporting their career development
  • 3 years in an account management or consulting role
  • Proven ability to gain respect from and lead software development teams
  • Strongly familiar with and ability to apply various software methodology approaches such as RUP, Agile, Waterfall, Test Driven Design, and Fedway.
  • Knowledge of enterprise application development is critical, from understanding underlying database design to developing for multi-tier Web applications. Understanding of Database design, OO design, SQL , Java.
  • Strong written, verbal, and presentation skills.
  • Knowledge of retail, content management, catalog management and merchandising systems.
  • Consulting experience is preferred.
