Senior Data Analyst (Redmond, WA)

This position sits within Data Sciences team with OSG. The purpose of the group is to carry out deep analysis on various large data sets to generate business intelligence and extract insights for our customers across Microsoft.

Role Purpose

The candidate will be responsible for working with internal customers (Director, Senior Director and GM level) employees in Product Management, Product Planning and Product Marketing to find solutions to key marketing and business challenges that are best addressed alone or in combination with large data sets of Internet users collected internally or through 3rd parties and/quantitative market survey research.

Required Skills:

  • Demonstrated experience in exploratory data analysis and data mining process of large data sets
  • Software development skills (C/C++, Perl, Java, SQL, etc.)
  • Creation and implementation of statistical predictive models including such algorithms as neural networks, decision tress, regression, clustering, association etc
  • Knowledge of major data mining platforms and applications and experience using major statistical analysis packages
  • This person should be familiar with model selection based on resampling; e.g. using cross validation to select hyperparameters (the parameters used to construct a model).
  • Experience assessing the statistical significance of performance differences between models is preferred; e.g. hypothesis testing to compare a model with new features to an already deployed model.

Desired Skills
  • Candidate will exhibit leadership qualities, have prior experience working with senior management to find solutions to client problems, and be able to provide guidance as needed to other team members.
  • Strong experience in requirements definition, analysis, conducting customer interviews, and leading teams

Key Accountabilities
  • Work closely with internal business units understand the key business and marketing challenges they face.
  • Design and deliver analytics based solutions with tangible business value to internal clients
  • Provide thought leadership in design of research methods and the selection of data set(s) to be employed to bring data driven insight to the internal customers and communicate them to internal clients to help them understand the benefits of approaching the problem given a specific data set and analytical plan.
  • Utilizing all available resources, implement the study/analysis and translate findings into powerful written presentations that focus on and highlight the key data driven insight that are created by the analysis.
  • Manage a portfolio of intensive analytical engagements using advanced statistics, optimization and other quantitative methods (neural networks, data mining, systems dynamics etc.)
  • Keep all work focused on making an impact on the strategies developed and the key decisions made by the Business Units in terms of Product Management, Product Marketing and Product Planning.
  • Deliver presentations to clients in person and over phone/internet that are clear and concise that highlight the data driver insight most likely to guide strategy decisions.

Knowledge, Skills and Experience
  • Passion and deep technical competency in mathematical modeling, statistics and business analytics.
  • A proven record of thought leadership in the modeling/analytics area - through publications and/or presentations.
  • 15+ years experience (including Masters or PhD) in the application of mathematical modeling, advanced statistical analysis and business analytics to enable decision-making in business.
  • Experience with techniques such as Data mining, Advanced Statistics, Artificial Intelligence based methods, systems dynamics, Monte Carlo simulations, operations research/ optimization etc.
  • Experience in using tools such as SAS and/or other data mining & text mining tools
  • Proven problem-solving skills.
  • Excellent computation and data management skills.
  • Ability to take complex and/or technical concepts and describe them in easy to understand business terminology.
  • Strong project management, writing, strategic thinking and interpersonal skills.
  • A track-record of succeeding in client facing roles

Qualifications
  • Master's or PhD from a reputed institution
  • Field of graduate education - Mathematics, statistics, science, engineering, operations Research, business, computer science or management science
  • Coursework and thesis must involve extensive quantitative modeling and/or analysis
