Description
The Mathematics and Computing Technology (M&CT) organization in Phantom Works, the central R&D organization in the Boeing Company, invites applications for an applied research position as Advanced Computing Technologist. We are interested in innovative applied researchers with interests and experience in data mining with a strong background in statistics, probability, and mathematics and with strong programming skills. Experience in working with sensor data and other time dependent multivariate data is desired. The successful applicant will be expected to participate in and to lead multiple technical projects, effectively work with colleagues of diverse technical backgrounds, help develop proposals for new business, interface with internal and external customers, keep abreast of new technical advances, help develop new intellectual property, and build and maintain a network of contacts and collaborators both inside and outside the company. This position is with the Data Mining & Knowledge Systems group of the M&CT organization, a leader in advanced applied research. M&CT represents a unique environment for interacting with researchers in computing, mathematics, and statistics, as well as with other Boeing organizations working on the commercial aviation products, space and communication systems, and defense products of The Boeing Company. M&CT offers its researchers the opportunity to propose new applied research projects and to lead and participate in externally funded projects. The publication of research papers is strongly encouraged. Representative Major Tasks: -- Performs applied research and development of data mining technologies of significance and value to Boeing programs. Exhibits a high level of creativity in extending computing technology. -- Identifies emerging advanced computing technology of value to Boeing programs. Evaluates and recommends technology by performing comparative analysis and trade studies. -- Provides subject matter expertise at the project/program level. Supports non-advocate reviews. -- Ensures successful deployment of advanced computing technologies. -- Contributes to the creation and review of research and development proposals. Influences decision makers to use appropriate computational tools and processes. Assists in forecasting computational needs and capabilities to address future business requirements
Competencies
- Computing Technologies: Extensive and specialized knowledge of data mining technologies. Working knowledge of multiple related information technology areas needed to develop and implement solutions. Ability to use major statistical or data mining packages or a programming language to create and perform customized analyses.
- Analytical Skills: Ability to collect, organize, synthesize, and analyze data; summarize findings; develop conclusions and recommendations from appropriate data sources with clients, customers and/or suppliers.
- Collaboration: Consistently works effectively and cooperatively with team members and fellow project team leaders, other employees and external customers.
- Research: Able to conduct applied research and development of data mining technologies to create useful tools and methods of relevance to customer needs and/or new products and services.
- Consulting: Extensive specialized ability to work with customers to understand problems, define requirements, develop appropriate solutions, and transition technology and information.
Education
Typical Education: PhD in Statistics, Data Mining, Machine Learning, or related field with 4 - 8 years relevant work experience or a Master's degree with 7 to 11 years' related work experience.
